Mesnaderos are the top-tier troops of the Castillian noble troop tree, and therefore the top warriors among castillian armies as well. They are heavy mounted soldiers usually equipped with heraldic lances, one-handed swords, heater cavalry shields and heraldic mail armor with tabards.
Mesnaderos are pretty hard and costly to train, and also expensive to maintain, but they make up for it by being the best cavalry unit the Kingdom of Castille can provide. Mesnaderos are true melee powerhouses and excellent horsemen; their armored mounts are very resistant and allow them to virtually steamroll enemy infantry and break their lines with relative ease. A large force of Mesnaderos can be a nightmare to their master's purse, but also cause havoc among his/her enemies in the battlefield.
Behind the scenes[]
A mesnada ("retinue") was, in the hispanic kingdoms of the feudal era, the gathering of a certain number of soldiers under the banner of their lord (who could be a local feudal noble, a council or the king himself), thus being the core units in the structure of a feudal army. Therefore, the word Mesnadero was typically used to designate the knights who were part of a mesnada; that is, minor nobles who were vassals of other greater nobles and had to answer their call to arms.
Actually, this organizational structure was reproduced up pyramid-shaped, since the high nobility formed their mesnadas with the retinues of their noble vassals, and in turn were summoned by the king. The result was just an enormous mesnada army constituted by plenty of lesser retinues.
